The UNC School of Social Work recently welcomed a new member to its Bachelor of Social Work leadership team.
Crystal Campbell was named the school’s inaugural BSW director of practicum education, joining Amy Levine, associate dean of undergraduate education, and Theresa Palmer, associate director of undergraduate education.
The School of Social Work recently received approval from the UNC System Board of Governors to establish its Bachelor of Social Work degree, following a unanimous vote.
The program continues to work through the Council on Social Work Education’s accreditation process, with the anticipation of receiving pre-candidacy status in June 2027, allowing the school to welcome its first cohort of 30 students in August 2027. Enrollment is expected to grow to 75 students per cohort by 2029.
“I am delighted to welcome Crystal Campbell as the inaugural director of practicum education for our BSW program,” Levine said. “Throughout the search process, Crystal stood out for her deep experience leading BSW practicum education and her thoughtful approach to undergraduate student learning. As we launch this new program, her expertise and leadership will help to build a strong foundation for practicum education and prepare students for impactful social work careers.”
Campbell, also named a clinical assistant professor, earned her Master of Social Work from North Carolina State University in 2019. Five years later, she returned to the Raleigh campus as a senior lecturer and BSW practicum coordinator for the NC State School of Social Work.
Campbell helped to propel change makers in the field, while challenging students to think critically and use empathy when dealing with clients.
Her tutelage is also shaped by more than five years as a therapist in private practice helping to bolster the well-being of her clients and their families.
“Private practice and higher education have taught me how to bridge evidence with real-world application,” Campbell said. “My clinical work keeps me grounded in the lived experiences students will encounter, and my work in practicum education has shown me how thoughtful program design can transform their learning.
“I’m excited to bring those strengths to UNC and help build pathways that truly prepare BSW students for meaningful, sustainable practice.”
